Damian Priour (1949-2011)

Picture
Damian Priour, Unknown, 2007
Austin,Texas

Mr. Priour's sculptures have been widely exhibited and are included in many important collections throughout the world. From museum collections including the Corning Museum of Glass to corporate collections such as the Equitable Companies, McDonald's World Headquarters and the Texas Sculpture Park and private collections as diverse as Emmaus Catholic Church and Cher's private collection. He is the founder of The Texas Chair Project along with The Global Chair Project, which was a mission to fund the arts, the environment, and medical research in Texas. His large-scale works are also represented in Public Art Collections of several cities including Austin, Corpus Christi, and Palm Springs. He has taught classes in creativity at the Pilchuck Glass School in Seattle and Centro del Arte in Monterrey, Mexico. He was named the Texas State 3-Dimensional Artist for the year 2007-2008. In his chosen media of glass and native Texas limestone, the glass is used as a metaphor for water. Damian Priour was active in the effort to conserve the Texas Hill Country and worked intensively strategizing about protecting water quality, open spaces and scenic vistas. Sadly, he passed away in 2011. His studio in Austin, Texas is now maintained by his son JJ, who wishes to follow in his artistic footsteps.
